Murphy’s Law

Geordan Murphy, the Leicester fullback who looked like he might walk away from Irish Rugby last week has been recalled for the biggest match in four years for Ireland. This will be his first start in a World Cup and a must-win match against Argentina.

Girvan Dempsey took a blow to the collarbone last Saturday and Geordan Murphy manged to leapfrog Gavid Duffy into the squad.

Ireland need to win with at least four tries and ensure that Argentina don’t pick up a bonus point, as it is expected that France will beat Georgia in Marseilles in a match that start two hours earlier.

Thus far Murphy has been ignored by Eddie O’Sullivan, but this immense task would seem to be suited to Murphy’s attacking talent!

On the inclusion of Murphy and the recall of the 31-year-old wing Denis Hickie in place of Andrew Trimble, O’Driscoll said: “They provide us with more game-breakers. Denis brings raw speed while Geordan brings his ability to make something out of nothing.”

O’Driscoll also said yesterday: “It would be a travesty to have worked as hard as we have over the last four years and not to put in a big performance this Sunday.

“First and foremost we have to think about our performance. Hopefully we can let that take care of whatever the score may be. If we can’t, we will die trying.”
