Wales made to Pay (9-19 Cardiff)
Ireland punished Wales for their mistakes in a thrilling start to their campaign in Cardiff.
Best made himself a hero in 46 seconds after O’Driscoll’s chargedown from Jones to score the first try of the game.
Stephen Jones punted three penalties in to the lead, but an O’Driscoll reach for a try close to half time made Ireland half-time leaders.
A third Irish try came nine minutes from the end, O’Gara scoring from close range, ended any Wales hopes of a comeback.
Several bloody injuries proved what a gruelling match this turned out to be, with stitches on both sides for Hickie and Ryan Jones.
O’Gara’s start was poor, but he came back to redeem himself several times later, and they were lucky to hold the slim 3 point lead from 12-9 after the break.
Eddie O’Sullivan’s men can now look forward to a home game against France at Croke Park in a week’s time.
Wales, meanwhile, must gather themselves for a trip to face Scotland at Murrayfield next Saturday.
